Will World War III Happen in 2026? Where the US Stands as Iran, Ukraine and Taiwan Simmer

World War III

Will World War III happen in 2026? No credible forecaster currently treats it as likely. But the US is already fighting a war with Iran, nuclear arms limits between Washington and Moscow have lapsed for the first time in half a century, and the Doomsday Clock sits at its closest-ever setting to midnight.

That’s the honest short version. There is no reliable number to put on the risk — and you should be suspicious of anyone who gives you one.

Is the US going to war in 2026? It already is.

The question isn’t hypothetical. Strikes opened on 28 February, followed by roughly 40 days of active fighting that ended with a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire on 8 April. A US naval blockade followed on 13 April. A memorandum to end the war, the Islamabad Memorandum, was signed on 17 June. The ceasefire collapsed on 8 July after Iran struck commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has since presented the United States with a road map at the UN providing for a regionwide ceasefire of up to 60 days and a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, mediated by Qatar, Pakistan and Egypt. Trump has ruled out lifting the blockade before Iran demonstrates sufficient goodwill. Global SecurityThe National

How likely is WW3 in 2026? What the numbers actually say

I looked for a credible, sourced probability estimate. I couldn’t find one worth repeating. The figures circulating online — 5.8%, 20–30% — trace back to a self-generated model and an unsourced aggregator, not to a named institution or forecaster with a track record. Rather than quote them with a caveat, I’ve left them out.

What’s real is the direction of travel. The Council on Foreign Relations’ 2026 survey of US foreign policy experts rates a Taiwan Strait crisis and Russia-NATO clashes as “even chance” for 2026, with high impact due to their potential to draw in the United States. “Even chance” for a crisis, not a world war — an important distinction the loudest headlines tend to erase. Meanwhile, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock from 89 to 85 seconds to midnight in January, citing a failure of global leadership, and pointed specifically to the approaching expiry of the New START Treaty, growing nuclear threats, AI and biosecurity concerns. New START expired on 5 February 2026, ending the era of US-Soviet/Russian arms control that began with SALT I in 1969. Its verification regime had already ended in spring 2023, when Russia suspended its participation. A treaty that lapses with a shrug, and no successor even under negotiation, isn’t reassuring — whatever number you attach to it. Where could it actually start?

None of these is, on its own, a world war. The genuine risk is that they don’t stay separate.

Is the US safe if WW3 happens?

Depends what you mean by “if.” From a conventional great-power war, the US is far more insulated than Europe or Taiwan. From a nuclear exchange, it isn’t.

Princeton’s “Plan A” simulation, modelling an escalating US-Russia nuclear war, estimates 91.5 million immediate casualties — 34.1 million dead and 57.4 million injured — with deaths from fallout and other long-term effects pushing the toll higher still. That’s a scenario built on realistic force postures and targeting data, not a prediction of what will happen. I could not verify a credible, dated rebuttal to weigh against it, so I’m not going to manufacture one. princeton

What do I do if WW3 starts?

For a nuclear scenario specifically, the federal guidance is unglamorous and consistent across every agency I checked:

  1. Shelter fast. If a multi-story building or basement can be reached within a few minutes, go there. Brick or concrete walls offer the best protection. Ready.gov
  2. Stay inside. Remain in the most protective location for the first 24 hours unless threatened by fire, gas leak, or building collapse, since radiation levels decrease rapidly during that window. Ready.gov
  3. Caught outside? Lie flat on the ground and cover your head — the blast wave and debris may take 30 seconds or more to arrive — and don’t look at the flash. Government of Indiana
  4. Decontaminate. If you were outside when fallout was falling, remove your shoes on entering shelter, and shower and shampoo as soon as possible. NYC Health
  5. Stay tuned, don’t try to reunite. Family members should stay wherever they are and reunite later to avoid unnecessary exposure. Battery- or hand-crank radios will still function; phones and internet may not. Ready.gov

Should we prepare for war in 2026?

Reasonably, yes — the same way you’d prepare for a severe storm or an extended power cut: know your nearest solid shelter, keep a battery or crank radio, and have a family meeting plan. I’d treat with scepticism anyone selling you more than that, since the preparedness industry has an obvious financial stake in inflating the threat.

What most articles get wrong

Where that leaves you

Watch three things this week: whether the Iran road map survives negotiation, whether any Russian action crosses the line into NATO territory, and whether a Chinese exercise near Taiwan fails to end on schedule. Beyond that, spend half an hour this weekend identifying your nearest solid shelter and adding a crank radio to your kit. That’s a more useful use of your time than chasing a number nobody can actually give you.
