In the fast-paced world of today, I am always being distracted. My smartphone’s unending notifications and the lure of social media are just among the many things that keep me not focused. Focus has become the main obstacle to overcome to get the most out of work performance. Thanks to the strategies I have employed to suppress the distractions, I have gained a clear understanding of this fact. It has been established by research that these distractions can decrease our output by a big percentage. A recent University of California, Irvine (UCI) study discovered that after a distraction occurs, it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to refocus. The lost time adds up so quickly that it can impair our ability to work with quality.

Best Focusing Strategies

Each of the following distractions has its solution though, I have discovered practicing some focusing techniques to be quite transforming:

  1. The Pomodoro Technique

To illustrate, working for 25 minutes without any distraction and then proceeding to a 5 minutes short break is an effective method. Personally, I am so pleased with the results in terms of productivity. In fact, I am able to work more without feeling burnout, which is also another advantage.

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation

One of the things that mindfulness, a program my publishers and I are working on, has contributed to is my ability to stay focused. Getting into a meditation starting from 5 to 10 minutes every day as a beginner has the power not only to expand your attention span but also to scale down stress. These are some of the meditation techniques I useβ€”taken from Jon Kabat-Zinn’s program designed for MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and adapted by myself, of course.

  1. Time Blocking

Scheduling the tasks in different blocks during a fixed period has significantly transformed my working procedures. I have been able to come up with a work plan that is structured and so minimizes distractions and is also more effective.

The Road to Cognitive Processes Free Of Distractions

This is a long-term process in which the environment around us has an indispensable impact on the level of focus we can achieve. Thus, here is my checklist to create a distraction-free environment:

Set up an exclusive workspace

Wearing noise-canceling headphones and using background music can provide sound to their ears.

Keep my desk neat and arranged in a manner that is efficient for the work

Apply website blocking tools to limit access to problematic internet sites

The Place of Technology

Contrary to the common notion that points finger at technology as the biggest distracter, it is also the best tool that can help us to focus. I find some particular useful tools and apps that assist me in achieving my goals to be productive at work.

Forest and RescueTime are among the apps I use. The first one is a platform that allows me to know how much time I have worked silently at my desk (entered time without a phone) and when I have spent it by taking it for some entertainment (my phone). The second, on the other hand, restricts my phone use during work hours.

Forming Long-Term Habits

Staying focused is not just a day-to-day issue; it requires the development of long-term habits. Some habits I’ve developed include:

Setting clear daily goals

Ranking tasks in a priority list

Regularity in taking short breaks

Properly sleeping and having a good workout routine

No doubt, the struggle of staying focused in the minutes of today where a thousand different people and things are disturbing is huge, but nothing uncheckable.
